4) What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Filmmakers gain their audience feedback by the use of media including magazine critics, reviews and test screenings. As high budget movies they can afford qualitative and quantitative feedback for big magazine reviews and many test screenings.

Without audience feedback we would not have that vital element of the audiences opinions on the work I have produced. Audience feedback is done especially to gain knowledge of improvements and what works well. The director or distributor will conduct various audience feedback strategics to an audience to find whether the consumers would be interested in their product or not. Without the consumers feedback no one would know if the product has captured the audiences eye or at least an understanding of an audience fan base. If audience feedback was not conducted there could be a huge failure for example a poster not intriguing or familiarizing a poster to a summary of a film and no consumers to watch the film. drawing people to anticipate feedback is using technology such as the internet websites and blogs. The audience can contribute feedback using the internet or invitations via blogs and websites.

Different types and measurements of audience feedback should always be taken out to cover all prime audiences.

Why is feedback important in the media?

The media effects everyone and everyone has an opinion on different medias. Feedback in the media is extremely important because it is what the consumers are wanting and feedback can give us individual and useful ideas that can be changed to help increase the positivity.

Feedback in the media is crucial because it then flows to the consumers and then to the right target audiences to encounter their finances. Without feedback the product will be unrecognized therefore no audience or consumer.

What types of feedback are possible?

Questionnaires/Surveys – There are two types of questionnaires open and closed. the most popular questionairre to use is a closed questionairre because it just asks you a question and the audience has the small factor of ticking or crossing a box referring the to the question. By doing this the results are much easier to analyse. There are advantages and disadvantages because you can just get false answers or not enough feedback on particular areas.

Open questionairres are more written based answers for the audience which is a disadvantage for the audience but an advantage for the researchers. Most commonly closed questionnaires are used for the publics convenience.

After drafting my poster plans I sent out closed questionnaire to see which poster they was more attracted to and liked. I used questions such as’ which poster do you prefer?, ‘ which poster do you think is the best? and ‘what element is the most eye catching? I also included an open question some people left it and other commented saying “needs more information” even though they knew it was a teaser poster, they didnt understand the concept of one.

I assessed my results by conducting a tally chart then into pie charts and graphs for a more visual understanding of my audience feedback.

Test screening/Focus Groups – We viewed our films to our peers as a focus group to give each other improvements. The improvement we were given to make our short film better was the cinematographic and our lighting between day and night because of the hours spent filming.  We knew we had to do something about this because it would confuse the audience. We filmed a mobile phone time then a later time and filmed a passing motorway at night as a distraction for time going pass quickly. Other advice given was the sound on our film needed some tweaking. We did this simply by recording the voice over louder. Our film was slightly shorter than what it should have been so we re ran the flashbacks three times to add more intensity and length. We had three days to finalize and improve our short films. Without the peer assessment I do not think our film would have been successful.

Test Screenings – Test screenings are for a wide audience before a movie is released to gain feedback from different audience groups.

Primary research – Making my own research and conducting my own questionairres and surveys to help me decide what idea to use and which is the most popular. I then summed up my results into graphs so it was clearer to see which poster idea was the most popular.

Secondary Research –  Research I conducted on my own for my own knowledge for example BBCfilmshorts, youtube and Film4 for a higher understanding of research. I would use this research and put it in my own words as individual research.

What I found out from my results?

SHORTFILM

The focus group said that the narrative and ending was good but too short so we times the flashback by 3 to add more length. The sound/ voice over needed tweaking so we recorded it much louder.

FILMPOSTER

My focus group said I had a simple yet creative teaser poster which would link into theirs. The only changes that were suggested was that I added a shadow to the character facing the light.

FILMREVIEW

My focus group said it was good but needed to be much longer. I had mastered the technique of Little White Lies.

How useful was the feedback to you as an individual/group in completing the project?

Without audience feedback the only feedback would be yourself and could be bias. It is always a positive for audience feedback and their opinions. My target audience feedback were very useful to me as they pointed out would could be improved and what they liked about my work.

How could this feedback help you if you were in a real Media context? How could it have been improved and made more useful?

If my products were made in a real media context I would have spent alto more time researching about my primary audience and their likes and dislikes. However I would of spent alot more time and better equipment on my products.
